The Gilmore Girls tells the story of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, a mother and daughter from the picturesque and rather quirky Stars Hollow, a storybook Connecticut town populated with an eclectic mix of everyday folks and lovable lunatics. Lorelai, originally from an upper class family, left her home and escaped her parents when she fell pregnant with Rory at 16, but now, sixteen years later, her parents have made an unwelcome entrance back into her life. Having made her share of mistakes in life, Lorelai, who is hilarious and very quick-witted, has been doing her best to see that her college-age daughter and best friend in the world Rory, an extremely intelligent girl who loves books and dreams of going to Harvard, doesn't follow in her footsteps. However, that may be easier said than done, considering that the two share the same interests, the same intellect, the same coffee addiction and the same eyes. =) The show is essentially about mother and daughter but it is peppered by the fantastic supporting characters this tiny storybook town of Stars Hollow is inhabited by. The growing relationship with the grandparents (played by the lovely Kelly Bishop and the wonderful Edward Herrmann) is an important one, as is the relationship with Lorelai’s and Rory’s best friends: accident prone, food obsessed Sookie and poor Lane who tries constantly to evade her mother's attempts at arranging marriages with celibate, strictly religious, future Korean doctors. Add in the men of their life (above all, Luke Danes, the handsome brooding coffee shop owner with an attitude), the crazy neighbours (Taylor Doosey, town selectman/magistrate/leader of the council/owner of the grocery store etc. and Miss Patty the dance teacher who was once on Broadway darling!), the competitive backstabbing school friends along with a constantly exciting, well written script with a catchy soundtrack and you have the perfect DVD series. Although primarily aimed at females, this is essentially a show for everyone and perfect for the family. Laugh, cry, laugh again as you watch the Gilmore girls struggle and quip their ways through their lives, they are role models without being perfect but most of all, they are excellent entertainment. Conclusion: Gilmore Girls is a humorous multigenerational series about friendship, family and the ties that bind. The language is fast, funny, intelligent and dizzy but it works. One of a thousand funny dialogues: Lorelai: The town smells like pickles, because a pickle train was derailed. Rory: A train full of pickles, who knew there was such a thing? Lorelai: Well, pickle train conductors, for one. Sounds so fun. I would run the greatest pickle train conductor. Can you see me? 'All ... all aboard, you ... pickles!' Rory: Hm, clearly you missed your calling. Lorelai: Well, luckily there's you, you're young, you're clever, you are a great pickle train conducting hope! Rory: I can't believe I'm missing this. Lorelai: Well, you can celebrate next year on the anniversary. Now, what's going on with you? Rory: Well, I can't make it to Friday night dinner tonight, but I have a very good excuse! Lorelai: Pickle train conducting seminar? In short, an incredibly humorous, heartfelt and romantic show. Lean back on your couch, relax and visit the quirky and cozy dreamworld town of Stars Hollow. And you'll feel right at home.
