My Whirlpool Refrigerater Keeps Needing Fixed

Rating of the author: published on 12.03.2009 by msmorvay
Pros: Nice design
Cons: Expensive, keeps breaking down
The Whirlpool ED5HVEXVQ 25 3 CuFt Side-by-Side Refrigerator is a 35" side by side refrigerator/freezer, ours is black on black but you can also get stainless or white. The freezer is a frost free freezer, it makes ice cubes and you can choose between crushed or whole. It also has a filtration system that filter all the bad stuff out of your water, this was very important to us as the water in our town is not very tasty, they claim it is safe, but I feel better having the filter. It makes the water taste about 100 times better than it does coming right out of the tap. There is also an option to turn the ice maker and water maker off, so if you have a little one who likes to push the buttons you can lock it so they can not. If you like you can turn a light on in case you want to get a drink in the middle of the night.

There are 3 shelves inside of the fridge and a vegetable and crisper drawer as well as a small deli drawer in the middle. There are several different slots inside and you can choose how high, low or seperated you want your shelves.

The freezier has one top shelf and then 3 baskets that pull out, my wife liked this feature as she thought it would be easy to pull out the baskets to see what is in back. The door area on the freezer is kind of small. There is one section where you can't fit more than a couple of skinny buritoes. But the basket space is very good.

It also has five wide shelves on the side of the rerigerator, they are more like holders, and can easily be pulled out and washed.

As far as far as the technical feature go they are as follows:

ENERGY STAR(R) Qualified
Contoured Door Design
SideWise(TM) Electronic Controls with Pulse Defrost
In-Door-Air(R) Door Cooling System
Accu-Chill(TM) Temperature Management System
Enhanced Interior Lighting
Extra Wide Adjustable Slide-Out SpillGuard(TM) Glass Shelves
Clear Humidity-Controlled Crisper
Clear Temperature-Controlled Convertible Meat Pan
Clear Snack Bin
2 EZ-Tote(R) Door Bins
2 Tilt-Out Freezer Door Bins
Satina(TM) Stainless Look Finish Available
2 Tall Freezer Baskets
In-Door-Ice(R) Ice Dispensing System
Integrated Can Rack
Full-Length Door Handles
Filtration System
Filter Indicator Light
Fast Fill Technology
Slide-Out Dispenser Tray
Rotating Faucet
Measured Fill

The water dispensor has fast fill technology which is really nice it only takes about 30 seconds to fill up a pitcher. It is not quite as fast as the sink but pretty darn close.

The door handles are quite long and ther is a little gold detailing (well gold looking), that adds to the refrigrators attractiveness.

To all who view it this is an attractive refrigerator freezer, and it should be we paid around $1700 for it. Unfortunately though as soon as our warranty expired at the 3 year mark, the fan in the freezer broke, and it failed to keep items cold any longer. So we called up Sears, a repairman came out and replaced the fan and the filter.

Less than a year later the ice maker stopped making ice. We figured we could make ice and didn't want to spend the money to get the icemaker fixed. Now it is 3 months later and a few days ago we smelled a burning plastic smell, that seemed like it was coming from the freezer. But after pulling everything out we could not figure out what the smell was.

Suddenly the smell stopped, but I noticed everything in the freezer was melting. Now I had to call another repairman to see if he can fix it. This is going to cost a good deal of money I just know it.

So the Whirlpool Conquest worked fine for 3 years, and then started giving us trouble. For $1700 you would expect a good deal of quality and a fridge that would last for at least a decade, but this one has been a lot of trouble for us. I love the design, and I love it when it is working, but I can not in good faith recommend a fridge whose motor and fan are constantly going out

This last time it only required a $20.00 compressor starter piece but we seem to have to keep fixing this.

I would recommend this for the design and features, but would be leary about recommending it because it keeps breaking down, but maybe I just got a bad one.
